Calumet College of St. Joseph Tops Pomeroys In MSFL Championship Game

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College sprint football team fell in the Midwest Sprint Football League Championship Game by the score of 38-13 which was held at Jay Barrett Field.

The season ends for the Pomeroys with a record of 7-1 while Calumet College of St. Joseph also finishes with a record of 7-1. While the Pomeroys won the MSFL Regular Season Championship back in October with the win today (Nov. 9), the Crimson Wave captured the MSFL Championship.

This marked the third consecutive year that CCSJ and SMWC battled for the MSFL Championship and the Crimson Wave improved to 2-1 in the those contests. The road team has won the league's title in all three games with SMWC winning in 2022 in Whiting and Calumet winning each of the last two in West Terre Haute.

Jeremiah Tosky completed 7-of-21 passes for 145 yards including a 65-yard scoring strike to Corbyn Cleveland. Cleveland was the leading receiver for the Pomeroys with three catches for 86 yards and the score. Derron Hazzard led the way on the ground for SMWC with 14 rushes for 62 yards.

For the Crimson Wave, Jamall Warnell rushed 14 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns while Zaire Davis posted 86 rushing yards in the game. Tre Simmons caught two passes for 38 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Nino Barbosa was 5-of-12 passing for 71 yards and a touchdown while Destry People completed his only pass for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Jeau Vinatieri was 1-of-2 on field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 on extra points.

Warnell broke an early scoreless tie with a 19-yard rush for the end zone with 14:50 left in the second quarter and Vinatieri added a 41-yard field goal with 4:14 on the clock to give the Crimson Wave a 10-0 lead. The Pomeroys answered right before halftime with a one-yard plunge from Hazzard with 30 seconds remaining to trim the lead down to 10-7 as the teams went back into halftime.

SMWC got the ball out of the half but a high snap gave the ball back to the Crimson Wave on the opening possession. Barbosa found Simmons for a 13-yard touchdown with 12:21 left in the third quarter to stretch their out to 17-7. It would be 21 unanswered for CCSJ with a Barbosa three-yard rush and Warnell reaching pay dirt from 37 yards out for the 31-7 lead with 6:30 to go.

Tosky found Cleveland for the 65-yard scoring pass to get it within 31-13, but Peoples found Simmons for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 5:49 remaining for the 38-13 victory.
